Who’s Who in the Voice Cast
Jason Bateman returns as the voice of Nick Wilde, a former con-artist fox who joined the Zootopia Police Department. Also back for the sequel are Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps and Shakira as Gazelle. New additions to the cast include Emmy winner Quinta Brunson as Dr. Fuzzby, Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan as sneaky-snake Gary, SAG Award winner Idris Elba as Chief Bogo, and comedian Fortune Feimster as a beaver named Nibbles.
Other cast members include Bonnie Hunt as Bonnie Hopps, Don Lake as Stu Hopps, Nate Torrence as Clawhauser, Jenny Slate as Bellwether, Alan Tudyk as Duke Weaselton, Maurice LaMarche as Mr. Big, Leah Latham as Fru Fru, John Dallas as Frantic Pig, Tommy Chong as Yax, Mark Rhino Smith as Officer McHorn, and Raymond Persi as Flash.
What’s the Plot?
After cracking the biggest case in Zootopia’s history, rookie cops Judy Hopps (Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Bateman) find their partnership isn’t as solid as they thought when Chief Bogo (Elba) orders them to join the Partners in Crisis counseling program. Their partnership is put to the ultimate test when they follow a twisting trail of a mystery tied to the arrival of a venomous snake in the animal metropolis.
“We are beyond excited to welcome everyone back to the outrageous, expansive animal metropolis of Zootopia, and take audiences on a hilarious, wild ride into parts of the city we’ve never visited before,” said codirector Jared Bush. “Whether it’s the marshes of semi-aquatic mammals, the vast desert dunes or even greater mysteries beyond, our heroes, Judy and Nick, will meet a lot of new friends, and discover even more about the world, themselves and a brand-new snake in town.”

Who Else is Back?
Jared Bush codirects the sequel with Byron Howard, who codirected the original with Rich Moore. Zootopia won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2017, defeating Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, My Life as a Zucchini, and The Red Turtle. Bush, who cowrote the original with Phil Johnston, tackled the screenplay for Zootopia 2 on his own. Although Bush wasn’t among the Oscar winners for Zootopia, he later won his own golden statuette for Encanto, Disney’s 2022 winner for Best Animated Feature.
The Oscar Pedigree
Zootopia 2 needs just two Oscar nominations to surpass Zootopia‘s solo bid. One potential nomination could be for Shakira, who revealed she has written an original song for the sequel. If Zootopia 2 captures the same Oscar magic as its predecessor, it could become only the third sequel to win Best Animated Feature, a feat previously achieved by Toy Story 3 in 2011 and Toy Story 4 in 2020. Last year, the Latvian film Flow claimed top honors, beating out two sequels — Inside Out 2 and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl — as well as original contenders Memoir of a Snail and The Wild Robot.
Four films from Walt Disney Animation Studios have won Best Animated Feature since the category was established in 2002: Frozen (2014), Big Hero 6 (2015), Zootopia (2017), and Encanto (2022). Disney subsidiary, Pixar, has won the most with 11: Finding Nemo (2004), The Incredibles (2005), Ratatouille (2008), WALL-E (2009), Up (2010), Toy Story 3 (2011), Brave (2013), Inside Out (2016), Coco (2018), Toy Story 4 (2020), and Soul (2021).
