Starz has officially announced a new addition to the Power franchise with the upcoming series, Power: Origins, which will delve into the early lives of beloved characters Ghost and Tommy.

New Series Details

Starz has picked up Power: Origins to series, marking the Universe’s fifth installment and the second prequel following Power Book III: Raising Kanan. The series will consist of 18 episodes, with Raising Kanan boss Sascha Penn serving as showrunner, writer, and executive producer.

Plot Overview

Power: Origins follows Ghost and Tommy as ambitious young entrepreneurs on the rise, determined to make their mark on the streets of New York City. The show’s logline describes this new installment as a “fun, rambunctious exploration of a new time in the Power franchise, highlighting the unbridled audacity of young men striving to become legends in the game.”

Cast and Characters

Deadline reports that the lead roles of Tommy and Ghost have yet to be cast. MeKai Curtis will reprise his role as early adult Kanan Stark in the new series, a character he has portrayed across all four seasons of Power Book III: Raising Kanan. Franchise executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson played Kanan in the original series. Raising Kanan is set to conclude with its fifth season, expected to premiere in 2026.

Returning Characters

The franchise’s first prequel introduced the character Branford “Breeze” Frady (Shameik Moore), the nephew of street legends Snaps (Wendell Pierce) and Pop (Erika Woods), in the Season 4 finale. According to show lore, Breeze plays a significant role in Ghost’s early career within New York’s criminal underworld. Depending on events in the final season of Raising Kanan, Moore could return for Power: Origins.

Franchise Background

The original Power series ran for six seasons from 2014-2020, starring Omari Hardwick as James St. Patrick aka Ghost and Joseph Sikora as Tommy Egan. Power Book II: Ghost followed Ghost’s son, Tariq St. James (Michael Rainey Jr.), as he worked to build his empire. This series ran for four seasons from 2020-2024 and featured stars like Mary J. Blige and Method Man.

Power and Power Book II: Ghost were created by Courtney A. Kemp; Penn created Power Book III: Raising Kanan; Robert Munic created Power Book IV: Force.

Future Installments

As previously revealed by Deadline, Power: Legacy (working title) is in development from franchise veterans Gary Lennon and Kendra Chapman. This sixth installment is expected to be set in the present timeline, following the events of Power Book IV: Force, which will air its third and final season later this year.
