Jason Segel’s Emmy Nomination and Collaboration with Harrison Ford
Jason Segel has officially entered a new chapter of his career, receiving recognition at the highest level. He has earned his second Emmy nomination for lead comedy actor for Shrinking, the Apple TV+ series he co-created and stars in as Jimmy, a grieving therapist, alongside fellow Emmy nominees Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, and Michael Urie. Segel shares with Gold Derby that this recognition feels particularly significant at this moment in his life and career.
The Meaning of the Emmy Nomination
Gold Derby: What does the Emmy nomination mean to you personally and professionally?
Jason Segel: I used to hear people say that the nomination is what truly matters. I would think, “You liar; you want to win.” But now I understand. Before this job, I had never been nominated for anything. It’s a sign that your peers are watching and acknowledging your work. I’ve been fortunate, but there were times I wondered, “Does anyone care anymore?” This nomination is a little affirmation of, “Hey, we see you. Good job.”
Why This Nomination for Shrinking Feels Meaningful
It’s an interesting question. I thought my 20s were my prime. In my 30s, my career slowed down, and I tried to do dramas, which limited my output. I believed the best part of my career was behind me. However, entering my forties brought a new electric feeling. Receiving this nomination now feels like I get to experience it all again as a grown-up, armed with lessons learned. I am very grateful and relaxed about it.
Navigating the Emotional Balance of Jimmy
For better or worse, a lot of this character reflects who I am. I’m a big guy who cries easily and sees the world humorously. The show has allowed me to utilize everything I’ve accumulated over the past 20 years.

Teasing Season 3
Jeff Daniels is playing my father, which is the perfect casting choice. As we started filming, I realized I unconsciously mirrored his physical movements. I learned a lot from him; he’s a genius.
Working with Harrison Ford
I have an athletic mentality. Knowing I’m about to perform a scene with Harrison Ford motivates me to excel. It’s not competition; it’s more like playing alongside Michael Jordan. On a personal level, [Ford] has become my friend, and I feel honored. I get to learn from him and ask about life, relationships, and even home repairs. It’s emblematic of my journey; I often wonder if I zigged when I should have zagged. Yet here I am, acting alongside Harrison Ford, realizing it all worked out beautifully.
