All Systems Go for Ryan Gosling’s Starfighter

Production for the highly anticipated Star Wars: Starfighter has officially commenced in the United Kingdom, directed by Shawn Levy. To celebrate, Levy shared an exclusive first look from the set, showcasing Ryan Gosling alongside newcomer Flynn Gray on a landspeeder.

“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter,” Levy expressed. “From the moment Kathy Kennedy invited me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, both creatively and personally. Star Wars has profoundly shaped my understanding of storytelling, and joining this galaxy with such brilliant collaborators is truly a thrill of a lifetime.”

Cast and Crew Revealed

Alongside Gosling and Gray, the cast includes Mia Goth, Matt Smith, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.

What’s the Story?

Details about the plot remain limited, but it revolves around Gosling’s character and his young companion (Gray) being pursued by villainous forces. Levy assures that Starfighter will explore new territory within the franchise, distinct from previous characters. “This is a standalone film. It’s not a prequel or sequel; it’s a new adventure set in an unexplored timeframe,” Levy stated during the film’s announcement at the Star Wars Celebration in April 2025.

“The reality is that this script is exceptional. It features a compelling story with original characters,” Gosling remarked. “It’s filled with heart and adventure, and there’s no better filmmaker for this story than Shawn.”

It’s important to note that Starfighter is not related to the 2001 video game of the same name from LucasArts.

Where Does Starfighter Fit in the Star Wars Timeline?

Starfighter is set approximately five years after the events of Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker (2019).
