Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna Embraces Viral Photos from ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Sequel

Are you keeping an eye on the viral set photos from the sequel of “The Devil Wears Prada”? Aline Brosh McKenna, the screenwriter, certainly is — and she approves.

Fan Excitement and Viral Buzz

As fans eagerly await a glimpse of Anne Hathaway reprising her role as Andy Sachs and Meryl Streep returning as Miranda Priestly, the buzz around the sequel, titled “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” has already sparked a viral sensation. Questions arise: Are these images revealing too much about the fashion or even the plot?

McKenna, however, is not concerned. She welcomes the online chatter and relates to the excitement it generates.

“People will stand outside just for a glimpse of these actors and characters they adore. Seeing them in wardrobe has truly excited fans, especially since it’s a fashion movie,” McKenna shared with IndieWire while filming on the Met steps. “We anticipated a lot of interest. Personally, I hadn’t seen this level of public engagement before, but it reflects the world we live in today. In many ways, we’re connecting with a different audience than we did in 2006. It’s a genuine desire to see these characters again. As long as everyone’s safe, it’s an honor that people are still interested.”

Returning to the Fashion World

Originally released in 2006, “The Devil Wears Prada” is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary with the sequel scheduled for 2026. Hathaway will return as journalist Andy, who last left the fashion magazine Runway but still received a heartfelt referral letter from her former boss, Miranda (Streep). Emily Blunt will reprise her role as Andy’s former colleague, Emily Charlton, with Stanley Tucci returning as Runway’s creative director, Nigel.

The plot of the sequel remains under wraps. Alongside McKenna and the core cast, director David Frankel is back, along with a talented crew of producers, DPs, production designers, and costumers, including Patricia Field, who designed costumes for the original film.

Fashion at the Forefront

As McKenna noted, “The Devil Wears Prada” is fundamentally a film that showcases fashion. “I got a little squeal when I first saw them in costume,” she admitted, referring to Streep, Hathaway, Blunt, and Tucci back in character. “It felt like my son’s bar mitzvah or something. I wanted to take pictures!”

McKenna expressed her admiration for the actors, stating, “I have to pinch myself frequently. The heart and soul of this project are the people. It’s incredible to see them again.”

A Celebration of Community

The highly publicized shoot is part of a larger celebration. “People crave in-person experiences and will seek them out,” McKenna said, referencing the recent sold-out outdoor fan screening of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” at Bryant Park as an example of the demand for communal cinematic events. “What’s wonderful about [‘The Devil Wears Prada’] is its significance to people. When you announce you’re doing it, it resonates because the original marked important moments in their lives, which is tremendously gratifying and thrilling.”

Reconnecting Through Nostalgia

McKenna aims to incorporate fans’ love for “The Devil Wears Prada” into the sequel. “We’ve known each other for 20 years, reflecting our own evolutions and relationships, which is really cool. It’s a true reunion, and we hope to give the audience that feeling too.”

“The Devil Wears Prada 2” is set to hit theaters in 2026.
