Trump’s Critique of the Smithsonian’s Woke Agenda

Donald Trump has raised concerns about the Smithsonian Institution, claiming its museums promote a ‘woke’ narrative. This article explores his statements and the implications for American cultural institutions.

Donald Trump Critiques the Smithsonian’s ‘Woke’ Narrative

Donald Trump has once again voiced his concerns regarding the Smithsonian Institution, claiming that its museums have adopted a ‘woke’ agenda. He stated, “Everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been.”

Trump’s Call for Change

In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump declared, “The Museums throughout Washington, but all over the Country are, essentially, the last remaining segment of ‘WOKE.’ The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future. We are not going to allow this to happen, and I have instructed my attorneys to go through the Museums, and start the exact same process that has been done with Colleges and Universities where tremendous progress has been made. This Country cannot be WOKE, because WOKE IS BROKE. We have the ‘HOTTEST’ Country in the World, and we want people to talk about it, including in our Museums.”

Government Review of Smithsonian Museums

Earlier this month, White House officials sent a letter to Smithsonian secretary Lonnie Bunch, announcing a comprehensive review of museums and exhibitions to “ensure alignment with the President’s directive to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives, and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions.”

Understanding the Smithsonian’s Exhibits

It remains unclear what specific exhibits Trump was referring to, especially regarding the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, which houses artifacts ranging from a George Washington sculpture to the Greensboro lunch counter to C3PO and R2D2. The main entrance leads to the Star Spangled Banner, a symbol of national pride, while displays also highlight America’s achievements in transportation, industry, and technology.

The Role of the National Museum of African American History and Culture

The National Museum of African American History and Culture features significant exhibits on slavery, aiming to present the “unvarnished truth” while celebrating the contributions and struggles that have shaped the nation.

The Political Context of ‘Woke’

The term “woke” has evolved to encompass various meanings, often used by GOP members to criticize progressive stances on race, diversity, and environmental issues. During his 2023 campaign, Trump remarked, “I don’t like the term woke, because I hear woke, woke, woke. It’s just a term they use. Half the people can’t define it.” His rival, Ron DeSantis, has also focused on an “anti-woke” campaign message.

Governance of the Smithsonian Institution

It’s important to note that Trump does not control the Smithsonian; it is governed by a Board of Regents, which includes the chief justice, the vice president, and six congressional members from both parties. The board also comprises nine citizens, including prominent figures like Michael Govan and Michael Lynton.

Independence of the Smithsonian

The Smithsonian has previously asserted its independence, particularly after Trump attempted to dismiss Kim Sajet, the director of the National Portrait Gallery. Sajet later resigned. The board emphasized that it is responsible for the governance and independence of the Institution, appointing a secretary to manage operations.

Commitment to Scholarship

In a statement, the Smithsonian reaffirmed its commitment to being “a beacon of scholarship free from political or partisan influence,” acknowledging the need to enhance these foundational values. The board directed Bunch to clarify expectations for museum directors and staff regarding content in Smithsonian museums.
