EXCLUSIVE: Kunal Nayyar’s Good Karma Productions has secured the rights to Trisha Sakhlecha’s debut U.S. novel, The Inheritance, which will be developed for television with Geeta Vasant Patel (Under the Bridge, House of the Dragon) set to direct.

Production Team and Development

Nayyar, Sakhlecha, and Patel will serve as executive producers alongside Good Karma’s newly promoted Vice President, Logan Kovarick. UTA facilitated the deal on behalf of the author.

Plot Overview

Released in January by Pamela Dorman Books/Penguin Random House, The Inheritance centers around the Agarwal family, who gather on a luxurious private island off the west coast of Scotland for a long-awaited family reunion. Raj, the patriarch and a business mogul, is poised to unveil his succession plan to his wife and three children regarding his multimillion-dollar Delhi-based enterprise.

Shalini, the delicate matriarch, yearns for her husband’s undivided attention after years of dedication to the family business. Myra, the favored child and owner of the island, is secretly facing bankruptcy. Aseem, the son and presumed heir, grapples with his loyalty to his wife versus his family obligations. Aisha, the youngest, is a party girl known for her legendary escapades, while Zoe, Aseem’s wife, is the outsider whose seemingly perfect life is built on deception.

Each family member harbors secrets they would kill to protect. Who will emerge unscathed from this high-stakes reunion, and who will fall victim to their own avarice? One thing is certain: this family gathering will shatter more than just their illusions of unity.

Creative Insights

The Inheritance is precisely the type of narrative that excites us about film and television. It blends murder, mystery, and opulence with the core of family drama. This isn’t just a South Asian tale; it prompts universal questions about morality and choices,” Nayyar stated.

Sakhlecha expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I’m excited to collaborate with Kunal Nayyar and Good Karma Productions on adapting The Inheritance for the screen. Kunal’s visionary approach and profound understanding of contemporary India make him an ideal partner for bringing the Agarwal family’s tale of wealth, privilege, and intrigue to life. With Geeta Patel at the helm, I am confident we will capture the novel’s emotional depth and suspense.”
