Complex Divorce Proceedings
In Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers, Season 2 introduces intricate divorce proceedings, highlighted by a court battle between Patricia “Patti” St. George and her unfaithful husband, Colonel Tracy St. George, in Episode 7.
Divorce in The Gilded Age
During the Gilded Age, divorce was only permissible on the grounds of adultery, requiring substantial evidence. HBO’s The Gilded Age series similarly addresses this issue in its current Season 3.
Research and Realism
“We conducted extensive research on how women had to substantiate claims of infidelity,” executive producer Beth Willis explained to Deadline. “In New York, women often hired individuals to falsely claim they had slept with their husbands to obtain the necessary evidence.” This reflects the burdens faced by women, akin to modern-day rape trials.
Patti’s Struggle
Willis commended creator Katherine Jakeways for her writing in the episode titled “All Rise,” where Patti confronts the challenge of proving her husband’s infidelity while grappling with personal shame.
“Katherine captured the humiliation Mrs. St. George felt while asserting her right to move on with her life,” Willis noted. “Christina Hendricks’ performance is outstanding.”

A Mother’s Resolve
Hendricks emphasized that Patti’s decision to seek a divorce stems from a desire to provide a better future for her daughters.
“It symbolizes her acknowledgment of the pain caused to [Nell] and the potential impact on Nan and Jinny,” Hendricks stated. “She feels compelled to set an example for them, despite her own fears.”
Challenges in Court
Tracy’s lawyer, Mr. McCarthy (Corey Johnson), complicates matters for Patti by demanding explicit details and intimidating her witnesses.
“The challenge was balancing the portrayal of her humiliation while discussing her intimate life in front of strangers,” Jakeways remarked. “Christina excelled in that scene.”
Nell’s Revelation
Leighton Meester’s character, Eleanor “Nell” Brooks, initially supports Patti from the audience but later reveals her identity as Nan’s biological mother, complicating the case. Nell’s willingness to expose her past with Tracy provides crucial evidence for Patti’s victory.
“For my character, it symbolizes taking a significant step forward,” Meester explained. “Despite my own struggles, I want to help Patti escape her long-standing situation.”
