Ray Winstone on Collaborating with Scorsese, Spielberg & Oldman

In a recent masterclass at the Sarajevo Film Festival, Ray Winstone shared his experiences working with iconic directors and his vision for the future of British cinema.

Ray Winstone Discusses Collaborations with Legends in Cinema

British actor Ray Winstone, known for his tough guy roles in films like The Departed and Sexy Beast, attended the Sarajevo Film Festival this week, where he led a masterclass discussing his career, collaborations with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Oldman, as well as his views on the British film industry.

Early Influences and Career Milestones

“I didn’t get much education as an actor,” Winstone shared during his talk at the Bosnian Cultural Center. “But during my brief time at drama college, I was fortunate to meet director Alan Clarke.”

Clarke directed one of Winstone’s first films, Scum, and the actor credits him for shaping his craft. “The performance in that film was not about me; it was all about what I learned from Alan Clarke. He was a great teacher, and I trust directors because they educate you, especially at a young age. That was my true schooling in the profession.”

Working with Gary Oldman

Winstone described his role in Gary Oldman’s directorial debut, Nil by Mouth, as a significant milestone. “It reflects the undercurrent of my background,” he explained. “I come from a working-class family, and I’ve witnessed these realities. Gary’s writing was brave, and when I read it, I understood it completely. He’s probably the best director I’ve ever worked with because he truly understands actors.”

Experiences with Scorsese and Spielberg

Receiving the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award at the festival, Winstone also recounted his experience working with Scorsese on The Departed. “I met him at The Dorchester hotel in London. I was initially hesitant about playing a policeman, but after discussing Jack Nicholson’s character, I suggested portraying his sidekick, and Scorsese agreed.”

Regarding his collaboration with Steven Spielberg on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Winstone remarked, “He appreciates having you behind the scenes, observing. Both he and Scorsese have unique filming styles.”

Advocating for British Cinema

The actor expressed his desire to see more British films in the industry, stating, “Countries like France and Germany produce their own cultural films. I hope the UK can do the same. Many filmmakers emigrate to America, often facing heartbreak.”

Dealing with Rejection

Winstone also reflected on rejection in his career, citing his experience with Marvel’s Black Widow as a low point. “I was called back to reshoot all my scenes. I suggested they recast, but I was under contract. I went back, got my hair done, and wore the suit, but I felt I had already completed the role.”

“Ultimately, you overcome it and redo the scenes. That’s part of the rejection process,” he concluded.

The 31st Sarajevo Film Festival runs from August 15-22.
