‘Nuremberg’ World Premiere at TIFF: Standing Ovation Highlights

The world premiere of ‘Nuremberg’ at TIFF has generated significant buzz, showcasing the film’s powerful narrative and stellar performances.

‘Nuremberg’ World Premiere at TIFF Receives Enthusiastic Response

Sony Pictures Classics has a strong awards contender with James Vanderbilt’s Nuremberg. The film, featuring Russell Crowe, Rami Malek, Michael Shannon, Leo Woodall, and Richard E. Grant, garnered a remarkable four-minute standing ovation during its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) held at Roy Thomson Hall.

Significance of the Standing Ovation

While a four-minute ovation may seem modest compared to those at the Venice Film Festival this year, such responses are rare at TIFF. Even a brief one-minute applause is significant, as seen with Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, which ultimately won the festival’s top prize, the Grolsch People’s Choice Award.

Plot Overview

The film follows a WWII psychiatrist, played by Oscar winner Rami Malek, who evaluates Nazi leaders before the Nuremberg trials. He becomes increasingly obsessed with understanding evil while forming a disturbing bond with Hermann Göring, portrayed by Oscar winner Russell Crowe.

Director’s Vision

During the Q&A session, Vanderbilt shared, “The films I grew up with, that I love, like JFK and Apollo 13, dealt with serious historical events but also told great emotional stories. It’s the emotional journey that stays with us.”

Character Insights

Malek described his character as “a classic obsessive.” He reflected on the complexity of the psychiatrist’s relationship with Göring, noting, “Imagine being in the same room as that person. He was charming and smart, and Russell embodies that.”

Crowe’s Perspective

Crowe humorously remarked on his craft, stating, “It’s like walking into a wild west saloon where everyone is a gunfighter.” He praised the script, emphasizing its quality despite production challenges.

Relevance of the Film

Deadline Chief Film Critic Pete Hammond highlighted the film’s contemporary relevance, noting, “As parts of the globe, including America, are once again embracing Nazism, this film serves as a crucial reminder of history.”

Premiere Logistics

Security at Roy Thomson Hall was tight ahead of the Sept. 10 premiere of Barry Avrich’s documentary, The Road Between Us. Attendees were advised to comply with the venue’s oversized bag policy.

Nuremberg is set to open in theaters on Nov. 7.
