Movistar Plus+ Strengthens Commitment to Spanish Entertainment Industry

Movistar Plus+ has reaffirmed its dedication to the Spanish entertainment industry, promising to remain a key player in original films and TV shows.

Movistar Plus+ Remains a Driving Force in Spanish Entertainment

Movistar Plus+ has once again sought to alleviate concerns regarding its future in original films and TV shows. Senior leaders assert that the company continues to be a magnet for creative talent in Spain.

Commitment to Original Content

CEO Daniel Domenjó addressed over 400 industry leaders last week, pledging to keep Movistar Plus+ as the driving force in the local creative sector. This statement comes in response to worries about the company’s commitment to original content, particularly following the unexpected departure of respected content chief Domingo Corral.

Domenjó, who was appointed CEO shortly before Corral’s exit, emphasized the company’s mission: “We want to continue being the driving force of the industry, the magnet for creative talent in this country. Movistar Plus+ must be the home of fiction, entertainment, and sports.” He highlighted the importance of evolving to reach new audiences with innovative formats and genres.

Support for Local Content

Movistar Plus+ is committed to supporting local content, as noted by Domenjó: “We want to break new ground and reach new heights in entertainment, fiction, and sports. We must remain a benchmark, relevant and original.” The event was attended by notable figures such as comedian Leo Harlem and soccer commentator Álvaro Benito, marking the start of a new phase for the company.

Spain has gained recognition as a creative hub, attracting investments from major players like Netflix and Amazon MGM Studios. However, many in the industry regard Movistar Plus+ as the leader in commissioning challenging and exciting films and TV shows.

Industry Reactions

The mood shifted in Spain following the announcement of Corral’s departure, prompting industry figures like Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz to co-sign a letter urging Movistar Plus+ to reaffirm its commitment to the sector. President Javier de Paz reassured attendees, stating: “We need a place to generate and tell our own stories, our own histories.”

Since 2017, Telefónica’s platform has invested €1.3 billion ($1.5 billion) in series, documentaries, and sports, generating 140,000 jobs across 15 autonomous communities.

Future Directions

Movistar Plus+ has reiterated its dedication to original film and TV content. At the Cannes Film Festival, Guillermo Farré, Head of Original Films & Spanish Cinema, confirmed the company’s commitment to the direction initiated by Corral.

Movistar Plus+ was a prominent presence at Cannes this year, showcasing films like Óliver Laxe’s Sirât and Carla Simón’s Romería. The company’s focus on auteur-driven projects continues to define its strategy.

Looking ahead, Movistar Plus+ is recognized for its acclaimed miniseries and thrillers, with upcoming projects like the Eurovision Song Contest drama La Canción and the psychological thriller Los Sin Nombre.
