Jurassic World Rebirth: Strong Opening Day and Box Office Forecast

Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth has made a significant impact at the box office, showcasing the franchise’s continued popularity.

‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Makes a Strong Opening

THURSDAY AM: Universal and Amblin’s latest dinosaur adventure, Jurassic World Rebirth, has kicked off with an impressive $30.5M on its opening day, which does not include Tuesday previews. This suggests a potential $133.5M over the 5-day weekend, with the 3-day projection at $80M. However, the film has received a CinemaScore of B, which is lower than the A- given to 2022’s Jurassic World: Dominion. Historically, the Jurassic franchise has seen Bs before, such as Jurassic Park III (B-) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (B+). The top-rated films in the series are the original Jurassic Park (A) and the 2015 reboot Jurassic World (A).

Opening Day Performance

WEDNESDAY: The fourth post-Covid July 4th winner for Universal, Jurassic World Rebirth, is projected to earn $28M on its opening Wednesday without Tuesday previews.

This opening day performance is commendable, surpassing the $27.2M earned by Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 last year, which resulted in a 3-day total of $75M and a 5-day total of $122.6M.

Box Office Forecasts

Currently, forecasts suggest that Amblin’s Gareth Edwards-directed film will achieve a $77.5M 3-day total and a $127.5M 5-day total. However, projections based on Wednesday openings can be unpredictable. The July 4th holiday falling on a Friday may impact box office performance, as it typically results in lower earnings. The last time Independence Day was on a Friday was July 4, 2014, when many top 10 films saw a drop in daily earnings.

Franchise Performance

Among the Jurassic franchise’s opening days, Rebirth ranks as the fourth highest. It is noteworthy that this is only the second time a film in the series debuted on a Wednesday, the last being Jurassic World III with $19M in 2001. The top three opening days in the franchise are 2015’s Jurassic World ($81.9M), 2022’s Dominion ($59.5M), and 2018’s Fallen Kingdom ($58.5M).

Theater Engagement and Social Media Buzz

Jurassic World Rebirth is being shown in 4,308 theaters and benefits from premium large format (PLF) screens. While there is no Rotten Tomatoes audience score yet, the film currently holds a 54% rating, an improvement from Dominion‘s 29%.

RelishMix reports significant engagement for Rebirth due to Universal’s social media campaign, which boasts 921 million followers across platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X—206% above the action-adventure sci-fi genre norms. The YouTube viral repost rate is 26:1, indicating strong interest, along with 219M views on Facebook. The studio has also released over 50 videos on YouTube, which is notably impressive. The film’s social media star is Jonathan Bailey, who has 5.4M Instagram followers.

Post-Covid Box Office Trends

Post-Covid Independence Day openings for Universal include 2021’s F9 ($70M 3-day), 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru ($123M 4-day), and last year’s Despicable Me 4 ($122.6M 5-day).

Meanwhile, Apple Original Films’ F1, distributed by Warner Bros, is estimated to earn over $6M today, following a gross of $6.9M on Monday and $8.6M on discount Tuesday. The total running cume through six days is expected to exceed $78M by the end of the day.

Conclusion

As the Jurassic franchise continues to evolve, Jurassic World Rebirth demonstrates the enduring appeal of dinosaurs in cinema, despite mixed reviews and audience scores.
