Financier and producer Black Bear has recently announced its entry into the theatrical distribution sector, appointing veteran executive David Spitz as the Head of U.S. Theatrical Distribution.

Leadership and Responsibilities

The former Lionsgate distribution head will oversee the theatrical release of up to 12 films annually, focusing on a mix of filmmaker-driven, action, and genre titles. He will report to Benjamin Kramer, President of the U.S. theatrical distribution division, who made the announcement today.

Expertise and Vision

“David is one of the most respected and accomplished distribution executives in the theatrical business,” said Kramer. “His track record of delivering commercial hits and strong relationships with exhibitors make him an ideal addition to our growing team. We are excited to collaborate with him to provide transportive theatrical experiences to audiences.”

Spitz’s Background

“I’m thrilled to join Black Bear at this exciting moment,” said Spitz. “I look forward to collaborating with Ben and the distribution teams across Black Bear’s territories to create theatrical events that engage audiences nationwide.”

With 18 years as President of Distribution at Lionsgate, Spitz oversaw theatrical releases that grossed over $10 billion domestically, including Academy Award winners such as Crash, La La Land, and Precious; franchises like The Hunger Games and John Wick; and influential hits like The Blair Witch Project and Knives Out. He also focused on underserved audiences, releasing the highest-grossing Spanish-language film in U.S. box office history, Instructions Not Included.

Black Bear’s Distribution Strategy

Black Bear’s U.S. distribution arm complements its London office, which releases films in the U.K. and Ireland while focusing on foreign sales and production acquisitions. In Canada, Black Bear owns Elevation Pictures, the leading independent theatrical distributor. Recent successes include Edward Berger’s Conclave and Sean Baker’s Best Picture winner Anora.

Upcoming Projects

In addition to its U.S. distribution presence, Black Bear has numerous highly anticipated titles in production and financing, including David Mackenzie’s Relay and Clint Bentley’s Train Dreams. Other films in post-production include Guy Ritchie’s Wife & Dog and an untitled action thriller starring Jason Statham.
