2025 Award Winners

Here are the winners of the 2025 Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards along with brief descriptions of each award:

Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award

This award honors a living individual whose ongoing contributions have significantly impacted television technology and engineering.

Recipient: Mark Schubin

Mark Schubin, with a degree in chemical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, has been involved in television since 1967, working across various aspects including design, manufacturing, lighting, sound, camera, editing, and distribution. His diverse projects span all seven continents, including Antarctica, from operas to the Olympics. He played a pivotal role in developing the broadcasting of the Metropolitan Opera (The Met) productions to cinemas and television stations worldwide and has continued to support this project for many years.

Mark describes himself as an “Engineer and Explainer.” His non-judgmental yet humorous communication of facts and arcane information endears him to creatives, business executives, and technologists alike. He has been the program chair of the HPA Tech Retreat since 1998 and frequently speaks at events and seminars on a wide array of technical topics and the history of television. He has been a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Engineering Awards committee for over 30 years.

A prolific engineering historian, educator, and professional writer, Mark transformed his long-running column on “Video Research” in Videography magazine into SchubinCafe, which is archived by the Library of Congress. His lifetime of accomplishments in the television industry is noted beyond this archive through numerous publications, patents, and awards.

Philo T. Farnsworth Corporate Achievement Award

This award honors an agency, company, or institution whose contributions over time have significantly impacted television technology and engineering.

Recipient: BBC Research & Development

Since its founding in 1930, BBC Research & Development has played a pivotal role in shaping how we watch and experience television. The team has led the way in breakthroughs that became everyday essentials, such as FM radio, stereo sound, and the Radio Data System that sends song titles and traffic updates to car radios. They have been central to significant advancements in television, including the development and standardization of High-Definition Television (HDTV), Ultra High-Definition Television (UHDTV), Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) for High Dynamic Range (HDR) information, and 5G networks. Looking ahead, their research on Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) continues to define the future of television. BBC Research & Development is also at the forefront of industry collaboration on the impact and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), co-founding the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity to create standards for understanding human/AI collaboration and copyrightability of AI-generated media. Behind the scenes and screens, BBC R&D remains a crucial industry force shaping how television connects us with stories and each other, today and in the future.
