First Impressions of the Blackmagic URSA Cine 17K

The new Blackmagic URSA Cine 17K is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated cameras of the past decade. Alongside it, early reviews of the URSA Cine Immersive camera are also emerging, showcasing Blackmagic’s innovative approach to filmmaking.

With the buzz surrounding the URSA Cine line, we spoke with Tyler Edwards to gain insights into his first impressions of the URSA Cine 17K and its potential for filmmakers.

Filmmaking Journey

NFS: Tell us about your filmmaking history. What sparked your interest in cinematography?

Tyler Edwards: My journey began in high school with a short film project that ignited my passion for filmmaking. Initially, it was just a hobby, but I immersed myself in learning through various YouTube channels. By 2015, I started taking on small corporate jobs and realized I could pursue filmmaking professionally.

Camera Experience

NFS: What cameras have you used previously? What do you typically seek in a cinema camera?

TE: I’ve worked with a range of cameras, including Blackmagic, RED DSMC2/DSMC3, Sony FX series, and Canon EOS Cinema. My primary focus has always been on a camera’s dynamic range, along with the specific features required for each project.

First Impressions of the URSA Cine 17K

NFS: What are your initial thoughts on the URSA Cine 17K?

TE: Blackmagic has truly excelled with this camera. The sensor is exceptional, providing a unique look with spherical lenses. It offers the compression of a 50mm lens while delivering a wider field of view, making the image feel larger than life. The highlight rolloff and lowlight performance are impressive, and I shared a detailed first impressions video on my YouTube channel.

Ideal Rig Configuration

NFS: Can you describe your current or ideal rig for the URSA Cine 17K?

TE: My setup was ideal for my needs, utilizing the Blackmagic Design shoulder mount and Wooden Camera’s Elite system. Their accessories, including the top handle and battery wedge plate, made rigging seamless. Additionally, the Blackmagic Design EVF is essential for this camera, and I powered it using a V-Mount plate with dual-voltage batteries.

Advice for Potential Users

NFS: What advice would you offer to someone considering renting or purchasing the URSA Cine 17K?

TE: Don’t let the 17K resolution intimidate you. Blackmagic RAW compression is efficient, and if 17K isn’t necessary, you can shoot in 8K or even 4K without cropping the sensor. Just be mindful of the camera’s power requirements and ensure you have sufficient batteries for your shoot.

Future Expectations

NFS: What features would you like to see in future Blackmagic cinema cameras?

TE: Before NAB 2025, I would have wished for the URSA Cine 12K LF sensor in a Pyxis body, but since that has happened, I now hope to see the 17K sensor in future models.
