Sam Elliott Joins Billy Bob Thornton in Landman Season 2 Trailer

Get ready for the return of Landman, the gripping drama about the West Texas oil industry, as Season 2 gears up for its premiere. The new trailer reveals exciting developments, including the addition of Sam Elliott as Billy Bob Thornton’s father.

Are you ready to return to the patch?

Landman, the acclaimed drama by creator Taylor Sheridan, delves deeper into the tumultuous world of the West Texas oil industry in its highly anticipated Season 2, as showcased in the latest trailer.

Paramount+ has unveiled the official trailer for the upcoming season, set to premiere on November 16. The clip highlights Billy Bob Thornton‘s character, Tommy Norris, who grapples with intense challenges, alongside Academy Award nominees Demi Moore, portraying Tommy’s friend Cami Miller, and Sam Elliott, who joins the cast as Tommy’s father.

Here’s what you need to know before Landman returns for its second season.

The Backstory

This modern-day Western features Thornton as the fixer for an oil drilling corporation. Day in and day out, Tommy faces fatal accidents, legal issues, drug cartels encroaching on company land, and numerous other complications — not to mention tumultuous relationships with his fiery ex-wife Angela (Ali Larter), his overly ambitious daughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph), and his determined son Cooper (Jacob Lofland). The life of a landman is never simple. The series is described as “an upstairs-downstairs narrative of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires driving a boom so significant that it’s reshaping our climate, economy, and geopolitics.”

Inspired by the nonfiction podcast Boomtown by journalist Christian Wallace, who co-created Landman with Sheridan, the show has become Paramount+’s top series, attracting 35 million global viewers for its premiere episode. Thornton received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Drama Series.

Who’s in the Season 2 Cast?

Alongside Thornton, Larter, Randolph, and Lofland, Season 2 will introduce several new and returning cast members.

The returning ensemble features Moore as Cami Miller, the wife of M-Tex owner Monty Miller (Jon Hamm, who will not be returning for Season 2).

Other returning actors include Paulina Chavez as Ariana Medina, Cooper’s love interest and widow of a co-worker who perished in an oil well explosion; Kayla Wallace as Rebecca Falcone, a tenacious lawyer for the company; Mark Collie as Sheriff Walt Joeberg; Sheridan regular James Jordan as Dale Bradley, a petroleum engineer and Tommy’s roommate; Colm Feore as Nathan, M-Tex’s general counsel and Tommy’s other roommate; and Andy Garcia as Galino, a drug cartel leader introduced at the end of Season 1.

New cast members include Sam Elliott — who previously collaborated with Sheridan on 1883 and whose role as Tommy’s father was kept under wraps until the trailer’s release — and Grey’s Anatomy veteran Stefania Spampinato in undisclosed roles.

What Happened in Season 1?

Late in the first season, Monty suffers a severe heart attack. With her husband’s survival uncertain, Cami offers Tommy the position of M-Tex oil’s president, which he reluctantly accepts. He immediately sets out to finalize a significant, risky deal that Monty had initiated, which could either yield enormous profits or jeopardize the company’s future. This will likely lead to conflict with his son Cooper in Season 2, as Cooper is acquiring mineral rights in the same region to launch his own company. Ultimately, Monty does not survive, making Tommy’s new role permanent.

Meanwhile, Tommy is kidnapped and tortured by cartel members led by Jimenez (Alex Marez), who has been a persistent adversary throughout the season as the cartel traffics drugs across the company’s land. Just when it seems like Tommy’s fate is sealed, Galino, Jimenez’s boss, intervenes, killing Jimenez and suggesting — or threatening — that their organizations must find a way to coexist. Tommy eventually returns home to Angela, finding solace in her support.

What Are Landman’s Award Chances?

Despite the popularity of Sheridan’s shows, Emmy voters have historically overlooked them. None of Sheridan’s series have received nominations in major categories — he had six opportunities this year with Academy Award-winning actors like Thornton, LionessZoe Saldaña, and 1923’s Helen Mirren leading his productions. While Tulsa King and Lioness received stunt nominations, and 1923 was nominated for costume and production design, Landman was completely snubbed.

It’s difficult to envision Season 2 breaking this trend next year, but as an oilman might say, nothing is impossible.

Where Will Landman Season 2 Be Available to Watch?

Landman is a Paramount+ exclusive, part of Sheridan’s expanding collection of shows on the platform, including 1883, Mayor of Kingstown, 1923, Tulsa King, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Lioness, and the upcoming NOLA King.

An earlier version of this story was published on August 14; it was updated on September 4 with the trailer and additional details.
