Eighteen years after being wrongfully convicted of murder, Amanda Knox is finally reclaiming her story.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox premieres on Aug. 20 exclusively on Hulu and stars Grace Van Patten as Knox, who was wrongfully sentenced to 26 years in prison alongside her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, for the 2007 brutal murder of her roommate, British student Meredith Kercher. Created by K.J. Steinberg, the eight-part mini series dramatizes the controversial case and the media circus that followed the American exchange student, who was twice convicted and twice acquitted.

Knox released two memoirs, Waiting to Be Heard in 2015, and Free: My Search for Meaning in March. Now 38, the author, activist, and journalist also hosted The Scarlet Letter Reports, a Vice/Facebook Watch interview series featuring notable women who rebuilt their lives after being demonized by the media.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox was co-produced by Knox and Monica Lewinsky, who was also the subject of scrutiny by the press and public during a sex scandal with President Bill Clinton. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the two women revealed how they became friends, how they reclaimed their stories, and how they got their lives back.
“Living through this kind of experience leaves this lifelong mark on you that nobody can really understand,” Knox said. “There’s a great desire to connect with people, but after being burned and taken advantage of for so long, you live with this constant terror that people will view everything you do or say in the worst possible light. When I met Monica, I was just glimpsing what it could mean to stand up for myself — and hope strangers would actually see me as a human being. … No one had walked that walk before me more than she did.”
Added Lewinsky, “When we met, I saw in her the pain that I saw in myself. She was desperate to get out of this box she had been put in. But you don’t often see people reclaiming a narrative in public. There wasn’t a road map for us. Our situations were different, but with all the betrayal I experienced, I’ve felt lucky that I still trust people; I’m still optimistic about the world and people — maybe that’s naive of me, but it helps me to keep going.”
