Demi Lovato is opening up about her different music eras!
The 32-year-old entertainer appeared on the Chicks in the Office podcast and shared insights on her return to pop music for her upcoming album. She reflected on her past music eras, evaluating what worked and what didn’t.
Lessons from the Rock Era
One thing that didn’t resonate with her? Her rock era, which featured the album Holy Fvck released in 2022.
“As an artist with a long career, I often reflect on what worked for me. I realized that the rock stuff didn’t quite work,” Demi admitted. “That’s okay; it was a passion project, and I revisited my roots from my emo days.”
Embracing Pop and Fun
Her upcoming album promises to be more enjoyable. “I realized what worked for me were hits like ‘Cool for the Summer.’ It feels authentic to where I am now, so I’m chasing that sound. I’m proud of the new songs and can’t wait for everyone to hear them.”

A New Approach to Songwriting
Demi also discussed her fresh approach to music, focusing less on personal experiences and more on fiction. “In the past, I wrote cathartic music about heavy topics. Now, I’m in a happy place, and I don’t need to write intense emotional songs anymore,” she explained.
“There’s a song called ‘Frequency’ that helped me find my sound. Even the emotional songs are approached differently. I allowed myself to create fictional stories, which was a refreshing exercise for me.”
Celebrating Happiness and Freedom
Demi emphasized that her new music reflects her current state of happiness and love. “I feel free and happy, and that’s what this music is about. It’s lighthearted and embraces where I am now.”
