The revival of Paramount TV Studios marks a significant shift in the television landscape, with Matt Thunell at the helm, promising to bring fresh content and innovative storytelling.

Revival of Paramount TV Studios Under Matt Thunell

EXCLUSIVE: The Paramount Television Studios label is making a comeback — and returning to its roots.

New Executive Team Announced

Skydance Media announced the top executive team for the combined Paramount company following its acquisition of Paramount Global, set to close on August 7. Dana Goldberg from Skydance will serve as Co-Chair of Paramount Pictures and Chair of Paramount Television, overseeing both Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Films alongside Josh Greenstein, as well as Paramount Television Studios.

A New Era for Paramount TV Studios

This marks the official rebirth of Paramount TV Studios, which previously shut down a year ago after an 11-year run. Housed at Paramount Pictures under Goldberg, the new Paramount TV Studios is a return to its original form, launched in 2013 by Brad Grey and managed by Amy Powell.

Leadership Changes

Goldberg is expected to appoint Skydance’s President of Television, Matt Thunell, as head of Paramount TV Studios, according to sources. The newly formed unit will absorb Skydance Television, known for producing series like Reacher, Cross, and Foundation, along with the merged Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, which includes the Taylor Sheridan universe and shows like Emily In Paris and MobLand.

Future Projects and Collaborations

Sheridan, whose deal with MTVE Studios extends to 2028, will be based at Paramount TV Studios. He is known for the expansive Yellowstone universe, along with franchises like Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown.

Transitioning Leadership

Keith Cox, head of scripted content at Showtime/MTVE, is expected to transition to the new label, continuing his collaboration with Sheridan and David Glasser from 101 Studios. Cox has been a key liaison for Yellowstone since its inception.

Executive Departures

As the merger concludes, former Paramount Global co-CEO Chris McCarthy and Nina L. Diaz, President of Content and Chief Creative Officer for Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, will exit the company.

New Production Structure

In the revamped Paramount structure, oversight of TV production will be divided between Goldberg (Paramount TV Studios) and George Cheeks, Chair of TV Media at Paramount, who oversees CBS Studios, BET Studios, Nickelodeon TV Studios, and See It Now Studios. Cheeks will also manage South Park, produced by South Park Digital Studios.

Future of Existing Projects

The new Paramount TV Studios is likely to take over existing projects based on Paramount film IP that had previously moved to CBS Studios. The fate of current streaming series from PTVS now produced by CBS Studios, such as Murderbot at Apple and Netflix’s Little House On the Prairie adaptation, remains uncertain.

Conclusion

These developments will be part of ongoing discussions between Goldberg and Cheeks as they navigate the future of Paramount TV Studios.
