‘The Buccaneers’ Season 2 Episode 7 Review: A Sweet Reunion Amidst Turmoil

Episode 7 of ‘The Buccaneers’ Season 2 offers a compelling mix of tragedy and joy, highlighted by a significant moment set to Taylor Swift’s ‘Lover.’
Exploring Episode 7 of ‘The Buccaneers’: A Sweet Moment Amidst Turmoil
Following the tragic elements of Episode 6, from Jinny’s asylum confinement to the death of Lord Richard Marable, The Fourth Marquess of Brightlingsea, Episode 7 of The Buccaneers delves into dark themes of divorce and infidelity. However, a moment of joy arrives halfway through the penultimate episode, set to Taylor Swift’s “Lover.”
Navigating Relationships in Turmoil
After Nan (Kristine Frøseth) testifies at Patricia St. George’s (Christina Hendricks) court hearing to support Patti’s desire for a divorce from Colonel Tracy St. George (Adam James), she leaves the room to find Guy Thwarte (Matthew Broome) has come to support her as a friend.
“[It was] so so sweet. I never know what song they’re gonna put on. That’s always exciting to see after they’ve edited, what’s chosen,” Frøseth told Deadline. “Obviously, [I’m] so here for Taylor Swift always. So that was exciting.”
Complicated Dynamics
Guy and Nan’s relationship this season has been complicated, to say the least. Their dynamic features a constant back-and-forth, where Guy first wrote letters to Nan that she never read, while she tried to suppress her feelings for him after marrying Theo (Guy Remmers) at the end of Season 1. In the fourth episode, Nan visited Guy in Italy but rushed home again to help her sister Jinny escape an abusive marriage, a power she can only retain by staying married to Theo.
“It was really sweet that [Guy] shows up and wants to support her. I like how their relationship is developing. He’s grown a lot,” Frøseth added. “The first time she was going through something really tough, he left. When she told him she was illegitimate, he went away, and now he’s really showing up for her, and it’s beautiful to see how they’re growing together.”

Soundtrack Highlights
The show’s soundtrack features mostly women musicians, with the addition of a Bleachers and a Lauv song in Season 2. The moment when Guy and Nan reunite at the courthouse and mirror each other on a staircase is reminiscent of their meet-cute in Season 1.
“We actually had a Taylor song on a different moment, but we loved that staircase sequence of dancing. We were really struggling to find the perfect song, and then we all sort of reached that moment where we went, ‘Should we?’ And we knew the time for Taylor Swift had come,” producer Joe Innes told Deadline. “We put it on, and we all cried. It just worked, and our hearts were full, and we just said, ‘We have to have it.’ Taylor’s team has always been quite supportive of the show, and it was the perfect match. It wouldn’t be a Buccaneers series without Taylor Swift.”
Supporting Each Other
Guy also supported Nan as she confronted Leighton Meester’s Nell about being Nan’s natural mother, walking her to Nell’s front doorstep. He was there at the end to celebrate Mrs. St. George’s victory in divorce court as well.
